The Chemung County Health Department is seeking a full time Public Health Educator. This role is Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with occasional night, weekend and travel hours required.
The Southern Tier Tobacco Awareness Coalition (STTAC) is a program of the Chemung County Health Department, serving Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben Counties, and funded by a grant from the New York State Department of Health as part of the NYS Bureau of Tobacco Control. Through partnering with youth, parents and community leaders, STTAC helps create lasting changes that prevent youth tobacco use, support tobacco-free choices and decrease exposure to secondhand smoke.
Engage local stakeholders, educate community leaders and the public, and mobilize community members and organizations to strengthen tobacco-related policies (both organizational and municipal) that prevent and reduce tobacco use, reduce youth exposure to harmful tobacco marketing in retail settings, limit tobacco industry manipulation of the retail environment, limit exposure to secondhand smoke, and reduce smoking imagery through the media.
Coordinate and collaborate with the other program element (youth action), with an aim of improving the health status of communities by changing community policies and norms about tobacco and tobacco use.
Establish relationships with media sources through regular correspondence to increase awareness and build support from the community.
Assist with leading STTAC coalition meetings.
Submit monthly reports for the Community Activity Tracking (CAT) System.
Maintain work plan deliverable documentation to ensure program goals will be met.
Communicate with coalition monthly via email with requests for support; i.e. letters to the editor, community event participation, etc. Provide updates at monthly coalition meetings.
Serve in an active role on regional community coalitions and committees.
In collaboration with other staff and partners, attend and organize events within local communities.
Attend NYS BTC meetings and trainings as required.
Maintain coalition website, social media; updates, current initiatives, news articles, etc.
Research, develop and maintain shared databases for coalition members, organizations, events, local leaders, legislators, etc.
5 hours a week are designated to Public Heath, duties as assigned.

Meet Minimum Civil Service Requirements; Either:
(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Master’s degree in public health, health education or health services management; or
(B) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in health education, health science, public health, health promotion, community health, health communications, education, epidemiology, wellness and fitness or nutrition, marketing, human services, social work or psychology and six (6) months experience in health education or a public health program, including paid or unpaid internships in a local health department or healthcare organization.
Additional Requirements: Must have reliable transportation and a valid NYS license, Must be able to work both independently and as a team, Strong communication and organization skills required, Occasional night and/or weekend hours are required, Occasional travel and overnight travel required.
