The Asheville Museum of Science (AMOS) is seeking an engaged and enthusiastic fundraising and marketing professional to further the museum’s mission: to be Western North Carolina’s home for experiential science learning, discovery, and exploration.

Overview: We are looking for an innovator, relationship builder, and pioneer who leads with vision and enthusiasm. The position is responsible for supporting all fundraising revenue streams and marketing communication channels, which allow us to achieve our mission, grow the museum, and maximize impact in the community. Leading by example, the position coordinates with the AMOS team and volunteers to manage annual giving, donor database management, special events, donor relations and stewardship, communications, and grants.

The ideal candidate has a passion for STEAM education and inspires confidence in and excitement for AMOS as a recognized pillar of Western North Carolina and the Asheville community.


  • Primary activities will include development and fundraising coordination and strategic communications.
  • Actively manages a portfolio of current and potential donors, including the development and execution of plans for each prospect. Plan and coordinate projects related to the cultivation or stewardship of prospects. These may include advisory groups, receptions, dedication events, special dinners, and luncheons.
  • Prospects, recruits, and engages a productive development and marketing committee to implement a development and communications strategy annual plan for the museum.
  • Executes individualized plans moving prospects through the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship management process.
  • Identifies grant proposal opportunities and ensures alignment with the museum’s five-year strategic plan and educational and staffing objectives. Drafts grant proposals and executes all reporting requirements.
  • Coordinates and manages information on contacts with colleagues, board members, and development committee.
  • Plans and executes special events integrated into the annual development and marketing strategy of AMOS.
  • Supports grant research and writing with an ability to identify and focus opportunities that align with educational programming goals, exhibits strategy, and overall goals of AMOS.
  • Safely in-person or through digital channels make public appearances, conduct speaking engagements, and attend pre/after hour networking events to share information about the museum.
  • Manages the fundraising database and tracking systems.
  • Prepares and presents monthly reports on priority projects to the Executive Director and Board of Directors.
  • Manages and produces invitations to programs and events, posters, fact sheets, press materials, the Museum website, social media, and email communications, working closely with the full AMOS team.
  • Oversees and coordinates the Museum’s communications strategy and advertising plan working with department heads, the Audience Engagement Manager, the PR consultant, and using traditional and new media platforms.
  • Produces and delivers Annual and Impact Reports working with the Executive Director and AMOS team.
  • Develops strategic partnerships that will guide and support the museums mission in the area and surrounding communities.
  • Partners with Education, Operations and Visitor Experience to align the AMOS experience across all museum activities and operations through investment and grant opportunities.
  • Supports the strategic planning process with community partners and museum team and board.
  • Identifies opportunities to cultivate community involvement in the museum and increases volunteer engagement.

Skills and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience. Demonstrated experience in fundraising, sales, and marketing required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of working experience in a communications-related field. Knowledge of WordPress, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Hootsuite, Mail Chimp, Adobe Creative Suite, and related applications required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including experience designing and delivering presentations. Demonstrated proficiency with active listening.
  • Ability to use visual storytelling and social listening to create unique and engaging content.
  • Digital savvy professional, open to learning a variety of platforms and applications.
  • Knowledge and experience in fundraising, fundraising techniques, and major gift fundraising.
  • Knowledge and experience with donor relations and fundraising technology systems.
  • Knowledge and experience in developing high quality reports and presentations with current computer and cloud-based systems.
  • Knowledge in Google Analytics and Google AdWords a plus.
  • Knowledge in CRM systems a plus
  • Experience with list segmentation methods/database management.
  • Proficiency in image editing and graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite and Canva a plus.
  • Superior organizational and event planning skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to enhance teamwork.
  • Experience and expertise in cultivating resources for project funding.
  • Experience with strategic planning and execution.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Ability to manage board relationships, make strategic decisions to enhance the effectiveness of the board, and manage resistance and change.
  • Ability to manage mission and execution to meet the needs of the community, visitors, members, staff, board of directors, community partners, and school groups.
  • Experience solving complex problems by building teams, enhancing collaboration, and developing action plans to support execution.
  • Experience recruiting and developing volunteers.
  • Experience developing processes, project management, and strategy development.
