The Academic Advisor for students pursuing the Secondary Education minor (SEM) and students pursuing the Learning and Education Studies (LES) major works with the Assistant Dean and other members of the Student Academic Affairs Office (SAAO) team in the College of Education (COE) to coordinate information and provide academic advising.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
Regularly advise Liberal Arts & Sciences (LAS) students enrolled in the Secondary Education Teaching minor regarding academic core and/or licensure requirements, appropriate class selection, academic policies and procedures, and campus resources. Collaborate with the SAAO, department chairs, and program coordinators to continue to maintain a seamless college-wide academic advising system for students
Serve as College of Education liaison to LAS and other campus partners in matters relating to the Secondary Education minor and teaching licensure
Assist with recruitment activities including Orange and Blue Days, Illini Days, College Open House, and all other College and Campus recruiting and yield activities and hold daily informational meetings during LAS summer registrations for any incoming freshmen interested in SEM
Meet with students interested in pursuing the SEM, and hold weekly information meetings on the application process
Regularly advise students in the Learning & Education Studies program regarding academic core requirements, appropriate class selection, academic policies and procedures, and campus resources. Collaborate with SAAO, department chairs, and program faculty on course availability, course scheduling, and student progress.
Support the College of Education’s remediation and retention efforts by serving as the Education Success Initiative (ESI) Coordinator, meeting with ESI students on a regular basis throughout the semester to monitor academic progress and determine a specific course of action to succeed academically at the university level. Support student success by serving on teams to plan, facilitate, and assist in developing and implementing goals and objectives and retention of students.
Advocate on behalf of students experiencing personal difficulties and referring them to appropriate campus resources
Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in a relevant field of study that enhances the individual’s ability to assist education students.
Experience with academic advising, student services or related experience in teacher education.
Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel and ability to work with online and electronic tools for program administration and advising.
Knowledge of communications and academic advising techniques to enhance student and program success.
Excellent ability to work independently as well as collaboratively, with a wide range of on-campus and off-campus constituencies and diverse groups.
Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to track and assess student success aimed at retention.
Demonstrated ability to work with other academic advisors and faculty in the coordination of a program and information.
Demonstrated interest in issues in undergraduate education, especially advising or education.
Evidence of proactive, individualized approach to supporting college students.
Excellent intercultural skills.
Knowledge of Banner, DARwin, and website tools.
Understanding of the academic policies, procedures, and systems at the , knowledge of college and campus policies (such as the Student Code: regarding undergraduate education)
Salary and Appointment Information
This is a full-time academic professional position appointed on a 12 month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after closing date.
