The position of Payroll Manager is responsible for complete oversight of the company's payroll function.

Essential Functions

  • Manage payroll operations and processing to ensure all payrolls are processed timely, accurately, and in compliance with legislative requirements and company policies.
  • Partner with People Team to ensure accurate and timely processing of payroll updates including new hires, terminations, pay rate changes, etc.
  • Mitigate payroll risks and control error rates. Immediately address and resolve any payroll discrepancies.
  • Manage regular preparation of relevant management reports, including weekly, monthly, quarterly and year-end reports (gross payroll, hours worked, vacation accrual, tax deductions, benefit deductions, etc.).
  • Develop and maintain payroll policies and procedures. Facilitate changes in regulatory processing and lead payroll-related projects.
  • Operate as the payroll subject matter expert. Provide excellent customer service by educating and providing assistance regarding payroll, taxes, wage and hour, garnishments and timekeeping processes, procedures, laws and regulations.
  • Balance day to day payroll processing activities with process improvement and key stakeholder communication.
  • Lead the completion, maintenance, and filing of all required records, paperwork, and documents. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws and best practices.
  • Ensure confidentiality and protection of employee data based on data privacy regulations.
  • Assist the Finance department by facilitating audits by providing records and documentation to auditors.

Education and Experience

  • 7 or more years of relevant and progressively complex payroll experience.
  • 2 or more years of experience leading the overall payroll function.
  • Payroll, HRIS, and/or other business system implementation experience preferred.
  • People manager experience preferred.
  • Benefit and 401(k) administration experience preferred.
  • Certified Payroll Professional or other payroll SME designation preferred.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Finance or Accounting from an accredited college or university preferred.
  • Experience in a high growth, rapidly changing technology and/or education environment preferred.


  • Demonstrated proficiency in payroll operations and knowledge of the reconciliation, finance processes, multi-state requirements, 3rd party process, and bank file balancing and transmittal.
  • Strong drive for results and work ethic, with the demonstrated ability to think strategically, execute tactically, and collaborate across many teams, levels, and situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and influence at all levels within the Finance department and cross-functionally.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate with autonomy and discretion as well as be collaborative and team-oriented.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate in ambiguity and able to pivot, switch priorities or direction, and still be successful.
  • Must be detail oriented with strong follow through.
  • Strong technical and analytical skills with demonstrated experience managing payroll and HRIS systems. Advanced data analysis skills and tools, including Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to maintain a flexible work schedule that includes nights and weekends.
