Job Duties:
The Medical Services unit of the Department of Athletics oversees and coordinates the health and well-being of all the student-athletes at East Carolina University. Reporting to the Senior Associate Director of Athletics/Student Services the individual serving in this position is responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

  • Direct the medical coverage for intercollegiate athletic teams, with a specific sport assignment with the Football program.
  • Provide means for the selection, retention, and evaluation of the Athletic Medical Staff (team physician, consultants, and certified/licensed staff athletic trainers).
  • Coordinate physical examinations for student-athletes with the team physician, Student Health Center, and other appropriate medical consultants.
  • Monitor and make recommendations to coaches and administrators regarding proper safety conditions and athletic team practices, conditioning sessions, facilities and equipment.
  • Direct the organization and administration of all aspects of the athletic training environment.
  • Initiate and enforce all policies and procedures of the athletic training facilities.
  • Inspect athletic training facilities to ensure compliance with prevailing safety and sanitation standards.
  • Maintain a stock inventory and requisition of supplies and equipment.
  • Plan, organize, and implement health care service systems in order to provide the student-athletes with care of their condition(s) by establishing a standardized procedure for the delivery of healthcare and medical services.
  • Coordinate insurance coverage and payment of medical bills. Supervise the Athletics Insurance Coordinator.
  • Provide direction and support to the University and NCAA Athletic Drug Education and Testing Programs.
  • Provide general public relations at all functions inherent to the position of Assistant Director of Athletics for Medical Services regarding parents, administrators, coaches, prospective student-athletes, and the community.
  • Create and implement a means of conveying the athletic department’s medical policies and procedures to student-athletes, parents, coaches and administrators.
  • Perform an annual review, enact changes, implement regulations, recommendations and guidelines of appropriate governing bodies.
  • Provide education and counseling in health-related matters to the student-athletes, coaches and administration
  • Serve on departmental and university committees.
  • Assist the Director of Athletics and Senior Associate Director of Athletics/Student Services in other duties that may be appropriate.
  • Nights, weekends, holidays, extended hours, and travel are required in the performance of duties.
  • Abide by all written policies, procedures and guidelines of East Carolina University, the Department of Athletics, the (NCAA), and all applicable conferences or associations.
  • Build quality relationships and work collaboratively and professionally with athletics, Pirate Club and University staff, students, and all constituencies and stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution is required.
  • Certified Athletic Trainer as designated by the Board of Certification
  • Licensed Athletic Trainer by the North Carolina Board of Athletic Training Examiners or eligible
  • Minimum five years post-undergraduate work in an athletic training capacity with a collegiate football program.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage/lead an intercollegiate athletic training department

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Athletic Training or related field preferred.
