Under the general direction of the Communications Manager, assists with the development and implementation of county-wide communication plans and projects. Develops and updates website content and manages social media outlets. Provides support and assistance with planning, developing, producing, and delivering high-quality communications materials. This position coordinates communications with the principle goals of education, professionalism, transparency, and building and maintaining public trust and integrity.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
1. Provides timely and strategic content for multiple social media outlets and responds to citizen communications received via social media sites and other online forums. 2. Assists with the development, design, publication, and distribution of materials explaining and promoting County program, services, and initiatives, such as brochures, booklets, reports, newsletters, flyers, and other informational items aimed at targeting a variety of audiences. 3. Develops and maintains updated content on the County website through coordination and communication with varying departments throughout the organization. 4. Acts as a resource for County departments for a variety of communication needs, including, education, training, preparing communications, etc… 5. Assists with the collection and organization of photos and videos of County activities and helps to prepare graphics and other materials for communications and public relations initiatives and projects. 6. Proactively monitors and researches trends in communication and public relations, and continuously surveys the industry landscape for emerging trends and technologies. 7. Coordinate arrangements for special County meetings and events: Assist with planning and handling the necessary arrangements, including location/space, food and beverage, supplies, decor, needed equipment (audiovisual, microphones, etc…), as well as content and presentation of materials. 8. Assists with the preparations of press releases and working with the media. 9. Supports the development and implementation of quality procedures, policies, and/or training initiatives that help to ensure the professional appearance and consistency of County correspondence, press releases, documents, e-mails, reports and other communications. 10. Coordinates and provides support for County-wide projects related to communication, including but not limited to, broadband and other accessibility initiatives. 11. Performs other duties as may be assigned.
1. An associate’s degree or equivalent college level classwork in English, journalism, communications, marketing, or a related field is required. 2. One to two years of experience performing professional level writing and communications is required. Experience working with public agencies preferred. Any combination of education and experience may be considered. 3. Communication skills necessary to provide excellent customer service and accurate information to county officials, department heads, employees, and the public in a professional and timely manner. 4. Knowledge and experience working with the media and preparing releases and other similar communications and publications. 5. Experience with both social media and website content management. 6. The ability to network with others and to build relationships with news/media outlets, elected officials, department heads, and a variety of other county personnel. 7. Computer skills necessary to effectively utilize software for word processing, publishing, databases, spreadsheets, e-mail, scanning and imaging, internet, social media and a variety of other computer programs. 8. The ability to multi-task and handle simultaneous projects requiring concentration and attention to detail skills. 9. Possession of a valid Michigan driver’s license and an acceptable driving record required.
