This position requires a general knowledge of park maintenance, including athletic field maintenance, turf care and basic horticulture skills such as pruning and planting of both trees and shrubs. Good working knowledge of landscape materials is essential.
Performs general labor and semi-skilled manual work in the construction, maintenance and repair of City facilities. This involves a variety of tasks which may subject the employee to heavy lifting and strenuous physical activity. Employee may prioritize, schedule, direct and review the work of seasonal and temporary employees, volunteers, and community service workers for work projects.
Employees are expected to perform all of the duties of the Maintenance Worker I class as assigned.
Plant turf, trees and shrubs; seed lawns; prune trees and shrubs; perform various landscaping work; rake and blow leaves; apply pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals.
Install, operate and maintain irrigation systems.
Set up athletic fields.
* Safely mix and/or apply pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals to grounds and landscape.
Maintain accurate records of time and materials used in work.
Interact courteously with other employees, utility customers, vendors and the public.
Correctly and safely operate all equipment and tools used in assigned division.
Perform minor mechanical repairs on such equipment.
Perform semi-skilled and general labor work in plumbing, electrical, mechanical, carpentry, painting, concrete work, welding, and general maintenance and construction work.
Read and follow blueprints and schematics.
Measure distance using a tape measure or calibrated instrument.
Regular, reliable and punctual attendance
Due to internal and external customer service needs, incumbent must be able to work a full time schedule, on-site (appropriate City work sites).
Works effectively under pressure and with frequent interruptions.
Completes work and projects in a thorough and timely manner.
Understands and follows directions from supervisor, posted work rules and procedures.
Works courteously and effectively with public officials, citizens, contractors, vendors, developers, supervisor, and other employees, both in person and over the telephone; assisting them with a wide variety of information pertaining to City and department.
Show initiative in performing job functions and work independently.
Perform related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Graduation from high school or equivalent AND one year of full-time paid related work experience.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS Must possess and retain a valid state driver's license without impending loss at time of appointment.
If necessary for assigned work, an employee will be required to obtain and maintain a Public Pesticide Operator's license, DSHS Water Supply Certification, First Aid Certification, Flagging Certification, Forklift Certification and/or Defensive Driving Certification, or other required certification or license.
Perform heavy manual labor in all weather conditions. This may involve physically strenuous, continuous or repetitive movements; skillful, controlled manipulations of small objects; fine, highly controlled muscular movements to adjust the position of a control mechanism; bending or stooping repeatedly or continually over time; working in small cramped spaces; climbing ladders or steps; walking on rough, uneven ground; and performing other physical tasks as required of the position. Frequently required to use hand tools which require repetitive arm, wrist and hand movement. Occasionally required to stand and reach with arms and hands, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend or crawl. Specific vision abilities include close, distant, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception and to adjust focus. The employee is occasionally required to lift or move up to 50 pounds. Position requires mental acuity to ensure thorough mental analysis of situations in a fast-paced environment. Employee is required to maintain confidentiality of information within the department. The employee may be required to deal with disgruntled individuals requiring the use of conflict management skills. Employee is frequently required to perform work in confidence and under pressure for deadlines, and is required to maintain professional composure and tact, patience and courtesy at all times.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS Employee performs work independently under general supervision of division supervisor. Work may be prioritized, assigned and reviewed by Maintenance Worker II employees on a project basis. Performance is reviewed through observation, reports, discussion and periodic formal evaluation.
